This is what I was doing 10 years ago, riding up the Alpe d&#8217;Huez, one of the premier climbs on the Tour de France. The climb is 13.8 km or 8.6 miles long, with an average gradient of 8.1%. There are 21 hairpin bends with a maximum gradient of 14% (according to my GPS). My time was 1 hour and 3 minutes, which is nowhere near the official record of 36 minutes and 40 seconds. In my defense, had I done the ride nine months earlier on my own bike (not the rent-a-wreck I was on) I&#8217;m confident that I could have handily broken the 60 minute barrier. The young woman with the ponytails kicked my butt at the end.
