Gaeta is glorious. Spring has sprung and everything is sun, sand and beaches. Wandering the hills brings us across rallies of cyclamen, rhubarb purple and dappled by the overstory. Anticipating the hot summer ahead, bright African daisies in white and lavender burst forth alongside our footpath for the last few weeks of cool weather.
A rattling bulldozer pushes sand around, softening and preparing the beach for the crowds of holidaymakers who will no doubt arrive in June and stay until September. Stretched deck chair to deck chair, no more than an arm’s length apart, across the length of the seafront, sunbathers will lay recusant under the smug security of inoculation.
A few hardy souls sport down jackets and long trousers. After all, what’s the point in having them if you don’t wear them? They move slowly so as not to break a sweat after dressing early, in the lingering cool of night.
Strawberries arrived and too soon sold out. Wild asparagus broke through the crags on the hills about a month ago, but cannot be bought for love nor money now. Instead, we find an abundance of deep, royal aubergine aubergines, perfect for moussaka or baba ghanoush.
Easter Sunday will likely be a muted affair, but come next week the kids will be back in school and with luck things will relax before summer’s invasion.

Italy was known as the garden of Europe!
