Edgartown is notorious for all the wrong reasons. Long before the Kennedys, Edgartown was and remains a quaint place for sea captains to hang their caps. Today its core is boutique hotels, t-shirt emporiums, and chichi restaurants – much like the other two towns we visited on Martha’s Vineyard, Tisbury and Oak Bluffs. Back in the 1970s you could afford to buy property in Edgartown. You could also afford to make a blockbuster movie called Jaws. You can’t afford the property any longer and the Orca has long since sailed, but the town retains its charm.
Happily, most of the tourists had gone by the time we picked up our mooring. End of season ice cream at the Scoop Shack was going for half price, so Carol and I tucked into a couple of healthy dollops of Green Tea and Gingerbread over Belgian Chocolate. Bad Martha’s microbrewery is a short walk from the town center and well worth the extra couple of miles if you like beer, or cheese, or cheesy playing cards.
