Having sold all three of my bicycles it’s time for a bit of nostalgia. This is what I was doing 10 years ago, riding up the Alpe d’Huez, one of the premier climbs on the Tour de France. The climb is 13.8 km or 8.6 miles long, with an average gradient of 8.1%. There are 21 hairpin bends with a maximum gradient of 14% (according to my GPS). My time was 1 hour and 3 minutes, which is nowhere near the official record of 36 minutes and 40 seconds. In my defense, had I done the ride nine months earlier on my own bike (not the rent-a-wreck I was on) I’m confident that I could have handily broken the 60 minute barrier. The young woman with the ponytails kicked my butt at the end. That is what youth and following a film crew buys you.
