For the past few days we’ve been enjoying sailing and seeing the sights of Mahone Bay. The pretty port of Lunenburg was deemed to be the best example of an British colonial settlement in Canada by UNESCO, notwithstanding that most of the earliest residents came from Germany and Switzerland. In true British style the original land was wrested from the indigenous Mi’kmaq without their agreement. As with so many things British in the 18th century, war, murder, religious persecution and deportations ensued. All of which eventually led to the Acadians becoming Cajuns, making gumbo a thing in Louisiana. The Mi’kmaq are now a Canadian First Nations people.
